Prescott Jazz Summit Aug. 23-25

This month brings the 23rd annual Prescott Jazz Summit, a special event celebrating the rich heritage and art of jazz music. The Summit has become a staple, attracting renowned artists and jazz enthusiasts from near and far. Each year it spans several days, offering a dynamic lineup of performances, workshops and educational programs. The event is known for its blend of local talent and professionals from all over the country, and often includes a mix of traditional jazz, contemporary interpretations and genre fusions, reflecting the dynamic and evolving nature of jazz.

Says the festival’s founder and director Mike Vax, “Our goal all along has been to bring world-class musicians to the area and present the music in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. There is always a lot of interaction between the musicians and the audience.”

This year’s events will come to multiple venues over four days. The Elks Theatre will open the festivities with the movie Jewel of the Desert, the story of a group of musicians in their 70s, 80s and 90s “gathering for one more chance to play the music they love.” It includes appearances by Vax and the Prescott High School Jazz Band.

On Friday evening the Marina Room at the Hassayampa Inn will host a meet-the-musicians reception, followed by the grand-opening concert, The Birth of the Blues, in the Elks Theatre. Saturday starts with free workshops open to musicians of all ages in the Ruth Street Theatre at Prescott High School, followed with the Evening Gala All-Star Big Band Concert, also at Ruth Street. On Sunday morning the annual Jazz Brunch will precede the special afternoon concert, both at Hassayampa Inn. This magical weekend will end with an all-star jam session at Murphy’s Restaurant.

In addition to its artistic contributions, a standout feature of the Summit is its commitment to education. Its free workshops led by experienced musicians provide students and emerging artists with invaluable learning opportunities. Vax estimates a high market value for these sessions, which cover various aspects of jazz, from performance techniques to historical and cultural context.

This year’s performers will include Michael “Gooch” Gurciullo, Ronnie Rose, Louise Baranger, Kim Richmond, Tony Vaca and many more, both local to Prescott and coming in from elsewhere. Walt Johnson is particularly known for his work with Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Barry Manilow, Barbra Streisand and the Four Tops, among others.

The Prescott Jazz Summit continues to grow and evolve, celebrating the joy of jazz and its ability to inspire and connect people from all walks of life. Whether you're a lifelong jazz aficionado or simply curious about the genre, the Summit offers a welcoming and enriching experience for all.
