Anastasia
A Tale of Musical Magic at Yavapai College

The captivating world of Anastasia coming to life at Yavapai College’s Jim and Linda Lee Performing Arts Center, promising an unforgettable theatrical experience. Inspired by the 1997 animated film and the true story of Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia, this enchanting musical has captivated audiences worldwide with its blend of history, romance, and spectacular music.

Anastasia takes its audience on a journey from the opulence of Imperial Russia to the vibrant streets of 1920s Paris. The musical follows the story of Anastasia (played by Alyssa Ebel and Callie Voorhies in alternating performances), a young woman who, after surviving a Bolshevik attack on her family, embarks on a quest to uncover her past and reclaim her identity. The production weaves a rich tapestry of adventure, love and self-discovery, set against a backdrop of striking musical numbers and lush, period-appropriate costumes.

Since its debut on Broadway in April 2017 Anastasia has won both critical acclaim and audience admiration. The musical’s compelling narrative and lush score have earned prestigious recognition, including Tony Award nominations for best musical, book and original score, Drama Desk Award nominations for outstanding musical and outstanding orchestration, and Outer Critics Circle Award nominations for outstanding new Broadway musical and new score.

The talented cast and crew are preparing to deliver a performance that pays homage to the grandeur of the original Broadway show while adding local flair. The cast will feature some returning performers as well as some young, new-to-the-stage talent. Director Craig Ralston says, “It’s the new talent and the level of the new talent that excites me.”

Audiences can expect a dazzling array of costumes, intricate choreography and a live orchestra to elevate the musical’s breathtaking score. Says Ralston, “The costume department’s been having a lot of fun. We did actually order a lot from Russia from a clothing-design factory, because we wanted to be authentic.”

The coming performance offers a fantastic opportunity to experience one of Broadway’s newest, most enchanting musicals in an intimate and accessible setting. Ralston had been waiting for the opportunity, and snapped it up as soon as it was available. “We check every month, and suddenly it came available, and we got it within two weeks.”  Whether you’re a longtime fan of the story or new to the world of Anastasia, this performance promises to be a memorable and magical event, appealing to musical-theatre fans of all ages. The bright costumes, uplifting and memorable music and lively choreography promise a performance with “a lot of funny moments and dancing that is just going to be incredible,” promises Ralston. “It’s very entertaining, it’s not a heavy musical. They’ve kept it light.”

If that’s not enough for an amazing experience, preshow Princess Teas before the Saturday matinee performances offer a unique and charming additional experience. All ages are invited to a magical tea party with costumed princesses before the show. Supplemental tickets are required.

Anastasia will run November 8-10 and 15-17. For tickets and showtimes visit the Yavapai College Performing Arts Center website, ycpac.com or contact the box office, 928-776-2000.
